Exam Eligibility

Congratulations on taking the first step toward becoming credentialed as an RHDS or CHDS. Review the eligibility requirements for each exam and submit your eligibility by paying the $10 processing fee. You will receive an “Authorization-to-Test” email within 5 business days, and then you will be able to purchase your exam from AHDI. Your “Authorization-to-Test” is valid for 180 days from the date of processing.

Registered Healthcare Documentation Specialist (RHDS) Exam

The RHDS is the level 1 credentialing exam for:

  • Recent graduates of healthcare documentation/medical transcription education programs.
  • Healthcare documentation practitioners with fewer than 2 years’ experience in acute care.
  • Experienced practitioners working in a single-specialty environment (ie, private practice, clinic, radiology, pathology, etc).
  • CHDS candidates who need to fulfill the RHDS prerequisite.

Your “Authorization-to-Test” email will provide you with a login and password to the Examroom.ai platform. You will pay your exam fees to AHDI and then schedule your exam with Examroom.ai (see pricing).

Certified Healthcare Documentation Specialist (CHDS) Exam

The CHDS is the level 2 credentialing exam for:

  • Registered Healthcare Documentation Specialists (RHDSs) with a minimum of 2 years’ experience in acute-care transcription or multi-specialty equivalent.

CHDS candidates will need to have earned the RHDS first. If you already have an RHDS credential, you may submit your CHDS exam eligibility. If you do not have your RHDS credential, you will need to take and pass the RHDS exam first. You may then contact AHDI to pay for your CHDS exam. Once purchased, you will be able to schedule and sit for the CHDS exam.

Your “Authorization-to-Test” email will provide you with information about Examroom.ai and the testing process. It will grant you the ability to pay for your exam. Once you have paid for your exam, you will schedule your exam with Examroom.ai (see pricing).

Certified Healthcare Documentation Professional (CHDP) Exam

The CHDP is an intermediate level credentialing exam for:

  • Anyone who participates in documenting patients’ health care, including but not limited to practitioners who document patient care in the health record, clinician-created documentation auditors/analysts, allied healthcare professionals, and scribes.

Your “Authorization-to-Test” email will provide you with a login and password to the Examroom.ai platform. You will pay your exam fees to AHDI and then schedule your exam with Examroom.ai (see pricing).

Certified Healthcare Documentation Professional Auditor (CHDP-A) Microcredentialing Exam

The CHDP-A credential is for:

    • Anyone who participates in documenting patients’ health care. This includes but is not limited to clinician-created documentation auditors/analysts.

CHDP-A candidates will need to have earned the CHDP first. If you already have a CHDP credential, you may submit your CHDP-A exam eligibility. If you do not have your CHDP credential, you will need to take and pass the CHDP exam first. You may then contact AHDI to pay for your CHDP-A exam. Once purchased, you will be able to schedule and sit for the CHDP-A exam.

Certified Healthcare Documentation Professional Scribe (CHDP-S) Microcredentialing Exam

The CHDP-S credential is for:

    • Anyone who participates in documenting patients’ health care. This includes but is not limited to healthcare documentation professionals acting in the role of a scribe.

CHDP-S candidates will need to have earned the CHDP first. If you already have a CHDP credential, you may submit your CHDP-S exam eligibility. If you do not have your CHDP credential, you will need to take and pass the CHDP exam first. You may then contact AHDI to pay for your CHDP-S exam. Once purchased, you will be able to schedule and sit for the CHDP-S exam.

CHDP-A and CHDP-S Exam Eligibility

Having the CHDP credential is a prerequisite to taking the auditor and/or scribe micro exam(s). As noted above, exam eligibility for the CHDP is valid for 180 days from the date of processing. CHDP holders are eligible to take the auditor and/or scribe exam without having to pay another $10 exam eligibility fee if you sign up and take your exam(s) within that 180-day window. CHDP holders who do not take a micro-credentialing exam within the 180-day window must apply for exam eligibility again and pay the $10 fee.

Certified Veterinary Healthcare Documentation Professional (CVHDP) Exam

The CVHDP is an intermediate level credentialing exam for:

  • Recent graduates of veterinary healthcare documentation/medical veterinary education programs.
  • Anyone who participates in documenting patients’ health care in veterinary medicine, including but not limited to practitioners, veterinary technicians, scribes, and other healthcare professionals who document patient care in the veterinary health record.
