Board Candidacy Overview

Director Candidate

Joyce Smith, AHID-F, CRCR

Manager, Health Information Management

Jenison, MI

Email:  joyce.smith@corewellhealth.org

Goals and Objectives:

Although my role within Healthcare Information Management has changed significantly in the past few years, my HIM roots are deeply entrenched in quality documentation.  Whether created by a transcriptionist, a scribe, or a clinician, inaccurate information can negatively impact patient care now and into the future.  We need to continue to support documentation integrity by bringing the need for quality audits to the forefront of hospital administration and technology giants.

I also fully support our growth into the veterinary arena, our beloved animals also deserve quality documentation practices.

What is the greatest asset you would bring to the leadership of AHDI?

Previous board and leadership experience.

Director Candidate

Julie Staal, CHDS, AHDI-F
Senior Healthcare Documentation Quality Analyst

Wyoming, MI

Email: julie.staal@corewellhealth.org

Goals and Objectives:

If I am elected to the board, I will be progressive and push for change. I want to see AHDI be more aggressive in the below areas.

Share AHDI’s Expertise:

The importance of monitoring where the industry is going to identify opportunities is pivotal. To position AHDI as a thought leader in the industry and be more aggressive around publications, news articles, and webinars – with a much farther reach. To do this, it will be important to reach other hospitals and medical facilities within the United States, obtain contacts, and do more networking.

Enhance Marketing of Healthcare Documentation Standards:

Industry standards and the value of a credentialed workforce should be emphasized to hospitals within the US. AHDI should be reaching a broader audience. This could be done utilizing a broader social media reach to raise awareness about healthcare documentation standards. Ever consider getting a Social Media Influencer to push our agenda?

Provide Resources for Career Expansion:

As we have curriculum for traditional roles, I believe expanded roles in healthcare should continue to be a focus.  Collaborating with industry experts of the more progressive hospitals that are already utilizing AI, such as DAX, would allow AHDI to see where this industry is taking us and not be left behind.

In summary, if I am elected to the board my main contribution would be the experience of 25 years working in an ever-changing healthcare industry, where our team has pivoted, embraced change, and reinvented ourselves to be leaders in document integrity. I would help AHDI to effectively support its strategic plan and advance its mission of promoting excellence in healthcare documentation far and wide.

What is the greatest asset you would bring to the leadership of AHDI?

Knowledge of the entire auditing and training process for our Document Integrity team. We are leaders in this area, always push the envelope, and have been very successful helping physicians be better at documentation but also changing their attitudes about what we do and why it is so important to them, patients, and the hospital.

Director Candidate

Jeanie Unger, CHDS

Healthcare Documentation Specialist
Dodge Center, MN

Email: junger.chds@gmail.com

Goals and Objectives:

The mission of advocating for professional excellence in the ever-changing profession of healthcare documentation for our present and future members needs to be in the forefront of the AHDI organization.  The organization needs to continue developing strong best practices for members to complete accurate patient health stories by finding new and improved ways to show how essential healthcare documentation is in telling the stories of our patients.  Providing career development through continuing educational opportunities for present and future members in updates to healthcare practices and provide education on the newest technologies, such as AI, and how they may affect one’s career.  Building membership through these educational and certification opportunities will demonstrate to employers the commitment the organization has to providing them and the members with the most up to date knowledge and support.  Encourage employers to recognize and compensate, if possible, the challenging work it takes to become certified, and the determination and continued commitment members must keep up with the industry through the necessary Continuing Education Credits needed to hold their certification.

What is the greatest asset you would bring to the leadership of AHDI?

The greatest asset I would bring to AHDI Leadership is my ability to think outside the box and suggest and investigate new ways to look at the industry and to be forward thinking of where our profession is headed in the future and to give the best possible education needed in that role.

Director Candidate

Joan VanVels, CHDS, AHDI-F

Senior Healthcare Documentation Quality Analyst

Grand Rapids, MI

Email: joan.vanvels@corewellhealth.org

Goals and Objectives:

As we navigate our ever-evolving professional world, it’s important to engage in progressive conversations to elevate our community. Comfort is found in the traditional, and I would challenge members to cultivate innovative ideas to grow our membership by embracing unconventional approaches to outreach. An example would be a roundtable forum with different perspectives and collaborating with thought leaders in related industries. In terms of career development, we could offer more programs and resources designed to help members explore new opportunities, advance, or change their career path. This might include small-group career coaching sessions focused on skills development workshops that encourage members to explore new fields or disciplines. Finally, when it comes to promoting best practices within the industry, the association could adopt a more dynamic and adaptive approach. Instead of following more conventional guidelines or standards, the association could facilitate dynamic forums or communities of practice where members can share real-world examples, case studies, and lessons from their own experiences. By encouraging members to engage in peer-to-peer learning, the association can promote a culture of continuous improvement, where best practices are constantly evolving to meet the changing needs of the industry.

What is the greatest asset you would bring to the leadership of AHDI?

The greatest asset I would bring to the leadership of AHDI is advocacy, not only for the patient and their medical record but also for current and potential AHDI members. I feel very strongly that every voice should be given equal weight and consideration to speak their absolute truth, especially when it comes to underrepresented perspectives promoting diversity, inclusion, and equity. In our world this means an accurate medical record that reflects EVERY patient’s health story. It also means listening to the voices of our association members by fostering a culture of openness, progressiveness, and inclusivity. I would advocate for and encourage members to defy the status quo, so we can share and embrace unconventional ideas for growing our membership, education, and enhance our careers.
