Resumé Writing Tips
Creating a well-organized resume is key to getting the attention of the hiring manager. A resume is most likely not going to be thoroughly read the first time it is looked at. You will need to create your resume in
a clear and organized manner to ensure it is easy to read and grabs the attention of the hiring manager.
Here are 6 quick tips to help you be successful:
1. Format your resume
Use a logical format and wide margins with clear headings, apply bold and italic typeface to help guide the reader’s eyes, and use bullets to call attention to important points. Keep it to one page, most managers do not have the time to go through more
than a page.
2. Identify and list your accomplishment
You should list a few job descriptions then list your accomplishments, companies are looking for people who can solve problems and showing them, examples will grab their attention.
3. Quantify Your Accomplishments
Your resume should highlight achievements that represent a picture of your marketability, it should sell your skills and strengths. A resume should not portray a bio of yourself.
4. Provide a learning objective versus career summary
Consider providing a career summary instead of learning objectives. Most resumes are similar in providing the same objectives such as seeking a challenging, interesting position, where I can use my skills to contribute. A career summary will
grab a manager’s attention, it can leave a good impression, it will accurately and powerfully describe you as a solution to their problems. It gives a brief overview of who you are and what you can do.
5. Proofread your resume
Remember it is important to have error-free writing, be grammatically correct, keep it clean, crisp and organized. You should also keep it to one page.
6. Network
Most positions are filled through networking. You can contact past employers, other people who worked for you, vendors, colleagues, and more. Remember finding a job is a full-time job, contact everyone and follow up with them.
