The HIPAA Privacy Rule protects medical records and other individually identifiable health information, collectively known as “protected health information” or PHI. In addition to HIPAA protection, certain healthcare information may require additional layers of protection under state and/or federal law. Sometimes referred to as “sensitive information,” this includes information related to the treatment of substance use disorders, mental health information, AIDS/HIV information information, the treatment of other sexually transmitted diseases, genetic information, reproductive healthcare information, and more.
