Credentials & Designations Minimize

To ensure that medical transcriptionists meet professional standards of excellence, AHDI issues two credentials and one designation.

Individuals can earn credentials through a combination of education and experience, and finally performance on an exam. Upon successfully passing the AHDI exam for either the CMT or RMT, individuals must maintain their credential through continuing education requirements. AHDI also offers a designation as an AHDI Fellow(AHDI-F).

Looking for test prep materials? Need some suggestions for continuing education credits? Want to show off your RMT or CMT? This catalog has everything you need. Download the Credentialing Product Catalog now!

For more information about the above credentials/designation, please see the links below.

Certified Medical Transcriptionist (CMT): AHDI offers a voluntary certification exam to individuals who wish to become Certified Medical Transcriptionists (CMTs). Individuals interested in this exam should have 2 years of acute care (or equivalent) transcription experience. This exam is considered a level 2 exam.

Certified Medical Transcriptionist - Retired (CMT-R): Any CMT no longer practicing medical transcription may choose to retire their CMT credential and maintain the designation of CMT-R, or Certified Medical Transcriptionist-Retired. Once a CMT credential is retired, individuals are prohibited from using the CMT without the “R” designation. The only way to reinstate the CMT credential is for the individual to take and pass the CMT exam.

Individuals who wish to retire their CMT credential must submit an application form and a one-time processing fee of $45.00. Download the form here.

Registered Medical Transcriptionist (RMT): AHDI offers a voluntary credentialing exam to individuals who wish to become Registered Medical Transcriptionists (RMTs). This exam is applicable for recent graduates of medical transcription education programs, or MTs with fewer than two years experience in acute care. This exam is considered a level 1 exam. Individuals interested in this exam may not hold a CMT credential.

AHDI Fellow (AHDI-F): An AHDI Fellow signifies that you have achieved a balance of successful activities in your profession that goes beyond regular transcription practice.
